3 things to do in a B-School

3 things to do in a B-School (Credits: www.cupofreviews.com)

For the past few decades, MBA has been the go-to choice of Masters for a large majority of students, and for good reason. It is an amazing platform to improve and showcase our talents and get that dream job and that fancy pay.

But on that path of self-improvement, we need to be mindful of certain things.

I have tried to list out three prominent things to do in a B-School. Read on to find out more.

Make friends, not Networks

Every time you ask somebody the famous question, “Why MBA?”, you almost always get the same rehearsed answers that inadvertently revolve around Networking and Domain change!

Computers Network, Humans form bonds

We are not some nodes in the vast array of interconnected populations, we are humans. We need to form personal and humane relationships with people, establish bonds that last. It cannot just be transactional and inorganic, but rather it needs to be selfless and organic.

Consider this for a moment, You are trying to borrow a book, and you decided to post it in your networking groups (WhatsApp and other such channels). You have also personally called up your close friends. Who do you think is more likely to help you with that book?

Even if someone from one of those groups responded, he/she is most likely to be a friend with whom you have had a prior connection.

MBA life is hard & super competitive as it is, there is really no point in filling it with shallow transactional(Give & Take) networks. Instead, form meaningful connections and relationships. MBA is one of those places where almost everybody is talented, even the ones that maintain a low profile might possess revolutionary hidden talents. So, don’t be picky.

Be generous, be kind, and you will automatically attract the right kind of people into your life.

Skills over Courses

Once you are in, it’s easy to get caught up in the rat race. The mad scramble to have the most CV points, the fight for keywords and power verbs. Amidst this chaos, we forget the real reasons why we’re doing what we are doing. We forget that we are here to acquire knowledge, expand our horizons, and most importantly to develop a certain skill set that would propel us forward in our upcoming management careers.

I have nothing against online courses, but I would definitely suggest that, please choose the courses judiciously. Make sure they are in line with your aspirations and your goals, don’t take up a course just because everybody else is or because someone said it’s going to look on your resume.

There is this ongoing trend, where management students are rampantly pursuing Data Science courses (Python and other Analytical courses). While there is nothing inherently wrong in doing that, but ensure that you are having adequate interest, and connection with that course, and not just for the sake of a CV point.

P.S. No offense to anybody who is pursuing Data Sciences

Don’t go out of your way to learn something that you are probably not going to use later, instead focus your energies on something more useful. Don’t shy away from investing your time in developing soft skills.

Side Hustle

I’m sure everybody at some point in their lives has dreamt of financial independence, the ultimate form of freedom, free from the corporate rat race, and the nine to five madness.

But, to get any closer to that we need to have a side hustle. It could be anything that can be monetized, a blog, a business idea, a product, or a service. The best time to learn and fail is now. Invest as much effort as possible on your side hustle whenever you can. This doesn’t mean you have to quit your job for your passions or hobbies. What it means is that, don’t just be doing your jobs and think that you can start a successful business once you have enough money.

It takes time and a lot of effort to get your hobbies to become passive sources of income. So, start now and create as many side hustles as possible. Very soon these small channels of passive incomes will eventually pave the road to financial independence.
